Detroit Lions Waive WR Dylan Drummond
Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Detroit Lions have waived wide receiver Dylan Drummond during their second round of cuts, according to multiple reports.

The move is a surprise, given Drummond's strong performance all throughout training camp.

In Detroit's final preseason game, Drummond recorded five catches for 46 yards.

He had been viewed as a strong competitor for a roster spot amongst several players in the wide receivers room.

The Eastern Michigan product was a player quickly identified by Dan Campbell and his coaching staff as a training camp riser.

The young wideout didn't sign with the team until after rookie minicamp, but wasted little time rising up the depth chart.

Should he clear waivers, Drummond will be a top candidate to return to Detroit on the practice squad.

The Lions began Monday with 76 players on the active roster after parting ways with 13 players on Sunday. They must trim the roster to a final 53 by Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Other candidates for a roster spot at wide receiver include fellow undrafted wideout Chase Cota and seventh round pick Antoine Green

Against Carolina in the preseason finale, Green caught three passes for 97 yards and a touchdown.
