Do Cowboys Have Starting Running Back Role Finalized?
Chris Jones-Imagn Images

The Dallas Cowboys' running back room is one of the most fascinating to watch simply due to the fact that after all offseason and a preseason game, we are still no closer to determining the depth chart.

Or are we?

Miles Sanders, Javonte Williams, Jaydon Blue, Deuce Vaughn, Hunter Luepke (fullback), Phil Mafah and now Malik Davis make up the room.

All have flashed at different times in Oxnard, with Blue standing out, and heading into training camp, Sanders, after putting together good days at OTAs and minicamp, might have had the lead to be the starter.

We don't think so now.

Instead, it has been Williams getting the majority of the starting reps lately with Sanders and Blue out injured, so could Javonte be the starter for Brian Schottenheimer?

“I'm not going to name the starter right now, Javonte is having a great camp,” Schottenheimer said. “Again, I'm not going to say he's the starter, but Javonte is having a hell of a camp and I love the professionalism, I love everything that he does. He's so smart, having a terrific camp.”

So, Schottenheimer is keeping things close to the vest, and he did state that both Sanders and Blue might see action against the Baltimore Ravens in the second preseason game, so that might subtly hint that the coaching staff needs to see more from the duo.

Williams and his bruising running style, coupled with his vision, ability to bust through tackles, and potential as a pass-catcher, he has all the traits Schottenheimer wants in a running back.

Is he the starter? Schottenheimer says no, but his words might suggest the top of the depth chart might have gotten a little clearer.
