The Patriots have been working to try and lock in its star defensive back Christian Gonzalez this offseason, but extension talks still seem to be far apart for the 2023 first round pick.
Gonzalez did not attend voluntary workouts earlier this summer, but was in attendance for mandatory workouts this week. So when speaking with the media, Gonzalez was asked if New England was still the place he wanted to play.
“Of course, I want to be here. I’ve said this multiple times,” Gonzalez said according to NFL.com. “I’ve been drafted here. I want to be rewarded as a Patriot. I love this town. I love this city. so of course I want to be here.”
Gonzalez remains under contract through the 2027 season after the team picked up his fifth year option.
Since joining the franchise, Gonzalez has proven to be one of the bright young cornerbacks in the NFL and amongst the most important players on the Patriots’ roster. Through three seasons Gonzalez has appeared in 24 games recording 145 total tackles, three tackles for loss, three interceptions and 24 pass deflections.
He played a key role in aiding the team to the Super Bowl last season, so keeping him in the secondary is a top priority for New England.
