Per Spike Eskin of Philadelphia's SportsRadio 94WIP, Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley said shortly after the Eagles blew a 21-0 lead en route to suffering a 24-21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys this past Sunday that the Cowboys "wanted it a little more."
On Monday, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was asked about Barkley's assessment.
"Obviously, we want to go out and put our best effort out at every point, and I felt like when I watched the tape, I saw the effort sky high on both sides of the ball [and] on special teams," Sirianni responded, as shared by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. "Obviously, they went and they got the win. There are always things that factor into it as far as our determination, our effort. I saw that it was high and we all have to be there. I think, like I said, we were."
Barkley may have been frustrated over the fact that he tallied just 22 rushing yards on 10 carries against the Cowboys. Additionally, Philadelphia was shut out in the second half of the contest after the visitors scored 21 unanswered points in the game's opening 20 minutes.
"Obviously, Saquon felt something [Sunday] night, and he’s got a great pulse for everything," Sirianni continued. "But as you look at the tape — which obviously, after the game, we don’t have the luxury of looking at the tape before we go in and talk to you guys, but I felt like the effort was really, really high in that game."
While the 8-3 Eagles still hold a significant lead over the 5-5-1 Cowboys in the battle for the NFC East title, the inconsistent play of the Philadelphia offense has generated headlines throughout the fall. According to ESPN, the Eagles ended Week 12 ranked 24th in the NFL in total offense with 303.6 yards gained per game and 23rd with 193.2 passing yards per contest.
Nevertheless, Sirianni revealed on Monday that he isn't taking play-calling duties away from offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo ahead of the Eagles' home game versus the Chicago Bears (8-3) this Friday.
"As coaches, we’re always looking for answers," Sirianni explained, per Zach Berman of The Athletic. "We’re never into assigning blame. It’s just looking for answers. I think what sometimes can happen is, 'It’s just that!' Well, it’s not just that. It’s every piece of the puzzle — coaching, playing, execution, scheme. Everything. We’ve got to be better in all those aspects."
As of Tuesday morning, ESPN BET had the Eagles as seven-point favorites versus the Bears.
