As part of a series of roster moves on Saturday, the Dolphins activated defensive tackle Kenneth Grant from injured reserve, according to Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN . They also waived quarterback Brady Cook and elevated running back Carlos Washington and defensive lineman Rodney McGraw from their practice squad.
The Dolphins designated both Grant and linebacker Trey Moore to return when they placed them on IR on Aug. 30. They are accounting for two of Miami’s IR activations, leaving six more at the team’s disposal. Moore is not back yet, but Grant is in position to debut against the Bengals in Week 5 after missing the required four games. Grant went on the shelf as a result of a toe injury he suffered in August.
The Dolphins selected Grant 13th overall in the 2025 draft, former general manager Chris Grier’s last with the organization. Grant, who starred at Michigan, played a full rookie year and made five starts. While recording a 51.7% defensive snap, the 6-foot-3, 326-pounder tallied 33 tackles (two TFL), five quarterback hits and two sacks. He finished the year as Pro Football Focus’ 107th-rated interior defensive linemen out of 134 qualifiers. The outlet was especially down on Grant as a run defender.
Grant will now attempt to impress a new Dolphins regime that includes GM Jon-Eric Sullivan and defensive-minded head coach Jeff Hafley. He will have a chance to emerge as a foundational pierce for a team that is off to an 0-4 start and at the beginning of a full-fledged rebuild. Grant will rejoin Zach Sieler, 2025 fourth-rounder Jordan Phillips and Zeek Biggers as the Dolphins’ top options along the interior. Hafley and D-coordinator Sean Duggan have heavily relied on Sieler, Phillips and Biggers, as all three have been on the field for at least 60% of defensive snaps.
As an undrafted rookie in 2025, Cook made four starts for the Jets in place of the injured Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor. He struggled mightily in each of those outings, all of which were losses, and did not make the Jets’ roster over the summer. The Dolphins claimed him off waivers on Aug. 31, but he was inactive for their first four games. While the Dolphins might bring Cook back on their practice squad, Kyle McCord is currently their lone QB behind starter Malik Willis.
