Dolphins FIRE Champ Kelly; Hire Josh Scobey

The Miami Dolphins fired interim general manager Champ Kelly on Wednesday.

They also hired Josh Scobey, the former Senior Personnel Executive of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Kelly was brought to Miami by Chris Grier last offseason after Reggie McKenzie left Miami to take the same job with the Tennessee Titans.

Kelly had previously been the assistant general manager and interim general manager of the Las Vegas Raiders prior to joining the Dolphins.

After Chris Grier was fired on Halloween last year, he was named the Dolphins’ interim general manager and handled Miami’s moves at the trade deadline in early October. He was part of the group that traded Jaelan Phillips to the Philadelphia Eagles for a 3rd round draft pick.

Josh Scobey is 46 years old and was the director of college scouting for the Arizona Cardinals before taking his most recent role with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Jaguars relieved Scobey of his duties on Wednesday, and it took him only hours to land in Miami.

Scobey was a 6th-round pick of Arizona in 2002 and played in the NFL until 2007.

With the NFL draft now in the rear-view mirror, expect new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan to clean house with the Miami Dolphins’ scouting department.

Sullivan was hired in January, and the draft process starts back in August and ends with the draft in April. So, you can’t join a new team in January and clean house because all of the legwork for the Draft is done as the scouts and executives have been on the road for months during the college football season.

Which is why most NFL scouts have their contracts expire in late April or early May. So, if a new GM comes in, they are free to leave (if they aren’t fired) and go to a place where they are more comfortable.

So, expect a brand new group of scouts working under Sullivan in the next few weeks as they begin to prepare for the 2027 NFL Draft.
