Dolphins Get First Win as Caleb Douglas Breaks Out
Nothing beats a matchup against the New York Jets to get your faltering team right. The Miami Dolphins came into Sunday’s matchup with the Jets winless, while New York was 2-3. Almost no one picked the Dolphins to win, and no one expected them to dominate the first half.
The Dolphins got things going early, scoring on their first drive on a Malik Willis pass to Caleb Douglas for his first career touchdown. It was also Miami’s first lead of the season. The Jets answered with a touchdown drive of their own, as Geno Smith found tight end Mason Taylor, the son of Dolphins great Jason Taylor, for a 13-yard score.
Miami scored again with just over a minute left in the first quarter on a 1-yard run by Ollie Gordon. Gordon finished with 15 carries for 103 yards and a touchdown. The second quarter was scoreless until Miami’s final drive, where they marched down the field and scored with just six seconds left on a Willis rushing touchdown.
The second half started to trend toward New York. The Jets scored on a Smith touchdown pass to Omar Cooper Jr., part of Cooper Jr.’s 5-reception, 115-yard, 1-touchdown day.
In the fourth quarter, Jets’ kicker Jason Sanders hit a 33-yard field goal to cut the lead to 21-17. However, Miami responded with a 63-yard pass from Willis to Douglas. Douglas finished with 2 receptions for 70 yards and 2 scores.
Geno Smith once again connected with Taylor for a 12-yard touchdown, then found him again on the two-point conversion attempt to cut the lead to 28-25 with 3:24 left.
Fortunately for the Dolphins, they ran out the clock, securing their first win of the season and head coach Jeff Hafley’s first career win. This was also Malik Willis’ first win as the Miami starter; he went 14 of 21 for 208 yards and 2 touchdowns.
While this win doesn’t help their quest for the No. 1 pick in April’s draft, it does mean that they won’t go winless. They will take on the New England Patriots next in Miami. As for the Jets, this was a big blow; no one wants to be the team that allows the “worst team in the league” to win. They will play the Las Vegas Raiders at home next week.
