Dolphins’ New OC Praises Young Running Back
It’s safe to claim that Miami Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon exceeded expectations as a rookie in 2025. He was one of the Dolphins’ last picks in the 2025 NFL Draft (sixth round, No. 179 overall), yet he turned out to be a crucial part of their running back room in his maiden season. Gordon saw the field in every one of the Dolphins’ 17 games and even logged a start against the Baltimore Ravens on October 30.
In light of the impressive rookie season from Gordon, Miami’s brand-new offensive coordinator — Bobby Slowik, who served as the team’s senior pass game coordinator last season — said some very complimentary words about the 22-year-old. More specifically, he claimed the “biggest thing” about Gordon is that “he runs big,” noting the physicality he plays with.
“The biggest thing with Ollie is not only is he big — he runs big,” he said (h/t to PhinPhanatic’s Dante Walker for the transcription). “When we have pads on, you’re going to hear him run. It’s not one where he’s just going to silently kind of sneak through the line of scrimmage. Everyone’s going to feel — it’s going to sound like trash cans are banging back there. There’s something to that. The O-Line gets energy from that when they feel the physicality from a runner.”
Gordon accumulated 199 yards rushing, three rushing touchdowns and 21 first downs rushing in his first go-around at the highest level. Additionally, the longest carry of his 70 attempts in total was for 20 yards.
It’s worth noting that he might not have gotten as many opportunities to contribute as a first-year player if not for the injury bug. After all, running back Jaylen Wright didn’t make his season debut until Week 7 against the Cleveland Browns because of a right knee injury, and Gordon did a more than adequate job of holding down the fort in his absence.
Gordon, a former Oklahoma State University standout, could very well begin the 2026 campaign as the Dolphins’ RB2, and the only player clearly ahead of him on the depth chart is De’Von Achane. The Dolphins just recently inked him to a four-year deal worth more than $6o million, and he’s one of the highest-paid backs in the league today. Achane put the league on notice as a third-year pro in 2025, totaling 1,350 rushing yards and finishing as the league leader among all qualified players in rushing yards per attempt.
