The Miami Dolphins have perhaps the thinnest defensive line group in the NFL, with just four players occupying three slots in their 3-4 base defense on the depth chart.
Currently the Dolphins sport just Zach Sieler, Benito Jones, Matt Dickerson and Neil Farrell as the entirety of their DT room, having lost Da'Shawn Hand and Calais Campbell this past free agency period.
Consequently, it is practically a foregone conclusion that the Dolphins will use at least one of their first three picks on a defensive lineman.
Nick Baumgardner of The Athletic, in the publication's latest mock, projects that the Dolphins will take Texas A&M's Shemar Turner with the no. 48 pick in the second round, having taken athletic freak safety, Nick Emannwori, with their first-round selection.
At 6'3", 290 lbs, Turner would be undersized for a team looking to make him a traditional 3-technique in a 4-3 defense. However, playing beside nose tackle Benito Jones as a 3-4 end, the smaller weight and frame would be much less of an issue.
The Los Angeles Rams drafted the similarly sized Kobie Turner in the third round of the 2023 draft, who came in at 6'3", 288 lbs. And their investment has paid dividends, with K. Turner producing a massive 17 sacks in his first two seasons from the DT position, playing on a defensive line that was not even filled with high-level, distracting talent.
The biggest issue for Shemar Turner will likely be his on-field antics, with one NFL scout telling NFL.com that as long as he can keep his temper, he has the potential to be an excellent player in the league.
Much of Turner's ability has been marred by on-field incidents, including a game in which he was ejected for throwing punches against Ole Miss' Michael Pettus back in 2023.
Teams will hope that he has learned from his mistakes, but it will still be a point of concern fo those looking to take the talented defensive tackle.
