Dolphins Predicted to Sign Former NFL Defensive Player of the Year

The Miami Dolphins have been looking to trade Jalen Ramsey for months, which means they will likely be looking for more help at cornerback.

According to Garrett Kerman at Clutch Points, Miami should be targeting Stephon Gilmore, a former NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He described signing Gilmore as a "perfect move" and "ideal fit" to stabilize the cornerback room.

"While he’s no longer the lockdown force of his prime, Gilmore’s instincts, technique, and football IQ still make him a valuable asset—especially for a team in desperate need of stability," Kerman said.

Gilmore will turn 35 in September and has played for different teams in each of the last four seasons. The former All-Pro corner made his first Pro Bowl back in 2016 with the Buffalo Bills, before he was traded to the New England Patriots where he earned both of his All-Pro nods (2018, 2019) and NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors (2019).

Gilmore's most recent Pro Bowl was in 2021 with the Patriots, but he performed well for the Minnesota Vikings last season.

Miami has a lot of question marks at the cornerback position. Storm Duck, Cam Smith and Kader Kohou are the projected starters right now. That is why Kerman noted a need for established depth and veteran leadership in the Dolphins' cornerback room as the biggest reasons for a Gilmore signing.

The Dolphins’ defensive backfield has been rocked by turnover and injury," Kerman said. "The departure of [Kendall] Fuller leaves Miami with a patchwork group... This lack of proven talent is a major concern for a team that expects to compete immediately."

Although Gilmore is not what he used to be, it would be a surprise to many if he does not land on an NFL roster at some point during the offseason or regular season. That could very well be the Dolphins, but a Ramsey deal may have to get done until an addition like Gilmoreis made.
