Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa sees MVP odds skyrocket after historic game

Tua Tagovailoa had a Week 1 performance that now resides in the history books after recording the fourth most passing yards in NFL history on opening day. That performance caught the attention of oddsmakers around the country as Tagovailoa watched his NFL MVP odds soar to the top of the board.

Depending on which site you frequent, the lefty either comes in tied for first in MVP odds with Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes or second right behind him. A huge jump from his top 10 ranking before Sunday's game.

Last year the QB led the league in passer rating with a 105.5 rating, as well as yards per attempt (8.9) and yards per completion (13.7) and threw for 3,548 yards, 25 TDs and eight interceptions.

As he headed into Year 2 of his offense, the hope was that he'd continue to improve as the franchise signal caller in Miami but after one week, he's on pace to shatter not just his own records but league records as well.

While consistently putting up stat lines like he did against the Chargers most likely isn't sustainable week to week, his MVP path is. It's a level of performance the NFL world saw glimpses of last year and one his coach Mike McDaniel is far from surprised by.

"It's validating to me because I don't feel crazy," McDaniel said. "That's kind of what I expected to happen with the work that he's done. I think he needs to continue — literally, it's the easiest most layup coaching point of all time — continue to do what you're doing. Honestly that's where he's at ... He's as coachable as any player I've ever been around in my life. I want him to keep doing that."

He spearheads the the fastest offense in football with two of the leagues best and fastest receivers in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Meaning big plays are aplenty for this Dolphins offense. An offense that has its eyes set on NFL records.

If Tagovailoa stays healthy and the offense continues to roll as they did Sunday in Los Angeles, the MVP award could be his to lose and ironically, his biggest competition may end up being his No. 1 target.
