Dolphins Should Extend Jordyn Brooks

After the April draft, we heard that the Dolphins wanted to extend their three building blocks ahead of the season.

Those three players were De’Von Achane, Aaron Brewer, and Jordyn Brooks.

Well, as we make the turn into the month of July and are sitting just a few weeks before training camp, the Dolphins have extended two of those pillars in Achane and Brewer.

So now, only Brooks remains as the key veteran in Miami who is on an expiring deal, and with that comes anxiety, as since Brooks is unsigned, his name is constantly in the middle of trade rumors around the league.

And frankly, why would he not be?

The Dolphins are not expected to be major contenders this year, so if you’re a team like Seattle, New England, Philadelphia, Kansas City, or even someone like Dallas, why would you not try to acquire an All-Pro like Brooks?

Teams can point to Denver adding former Dolphin, Jaylen Waddle, back in March.

However, it seems like this situation might be different.

Brooks is one of the main leaders of this team, and in his prime at 28 years old, he can be a mentor for second-round pick and fellow Texas Tech Raider, Jacob Rodriguez.

Miami does not need the cap savings from a Brooks trade to stay cap compliant, so why even entertain the thought?

If they can extend Brooks, then you are looking at a prominent off-ball linebacker duo of Brooks and Rodriguez when this team is ready to win in 2027 or 2028.

Last year, he had 183 tackles, 99 solo and 13 tackles for loss behind a defensive interior that did not come into its own until midway through the year.

He also played mostly alongside a former waiver claim, Tyrel Dodson.

Dodson is a nice player, but Rodriguez’s potential makes him the other off-ball linebacker of the future.

And that young defensive interior that Brooks played behind last season?

Well, going into year two, they should be much improved.

Also, imagine the trio of Kenneth Grant, Jordan Phillips, and Zeek Biggers as they head into 2027 and beyond.

Yes, you could talk yourself into trading Brooks ahead of the 2026 season because he has an expiring contract on what is expected to be a bad team.

But, potentially even more intriguing would be the prospect of extending Brooks either in July or August.

He is what this team needs more of as the rebuild continues.

Playmakers.

And that is why it makes more sense to extend Brooks than to sell him to the highest bidder.
