You know the Miami Dolphins’ situation at cornerback is dire when they just signed their 3rd cornerback in about 72 hours. Miami signed veteran cornerback Mike Hilton.
Hilton is 31 years old and has played the past few seasons in Cincinnati primarily as a nickel cornerback. Why is that important? Because Kader Kohou went down to an injury today at camp and had to leave practice, and he is Miami’s nickel back. We don’t know yet how serious that injury is, but if it’s serious, Hilton may be here to replace him.
Hilton went undrafted in 2016 and has played for Jacksonville, New England, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati.
Last year for Cincinnati, he played in 16 games, started 10, and had one interception. He has 13 career interceptions.
Hilton’s PFF grades last year were that he had an overall grade of 75.9, ranking him 24th out of 222 cornerbacks. A coverage grade of 68.5, ranking him 55th out of 222 cornerbacks. And a run defense grade of 91.7, ranking 1st out of 222 cornerbacks.
He has played in 123 games and started 56 of them.

With the addition of Jack Jones earlier, it is clear Hilton and Jones are Miami’s two most experienced cornerbacks now and I would be shocked if both aren’t starters come week 1.
The question is, did Miami lose a starting cornerback in Kader Kohou on Saturday, which prompted this signing of Hilton?
If not, then either Kohou or Hilton will have to slide to the outside and be a boundary cornerback, which isn’t ideal.
Dolphins 2023 second-round pick Cam Smith hasn’t been good the first few days of practice, which isn’t a surprise because he hasn’t been good since Miami drafted him. That may have also been a reason for this signing today, well, both signings today.
Miami was rejected by Rasul Douglas on Thursday when they made another offer to him. If the Dolphins, who had two cornerbacks go down to injury Saturday during practice, and one was carted off the field, continue to lose cornerbacks, they may have to raise their offer to Douglas.
But on the other hand, Douglas, who is a veteran, may be holding off on signing so he can skip training camp and practices, and he will sign with a team as the regular season gets near. He wouldn’t be the first veteran player to do that.
