Dolphins Sign Former Saints Linebacker

Although lacking the star quality of other free agent classes, the Miami Dolphins have added plenty of depth to their roster this offseason. According to one report, they've also agreed to terms with a two-time Super Bowl-winning linebacker.

As first reported by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler , "Free-agent linebacker Willie Gay Jr. is signing with the Dolphins on a one-year deal."

Gay Jr. played collegiately at Mississippi State, totaling 99 tackles (46 solo), 12 tackles for loss, three interceptions, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and one defensive touchdown in 31 career games.

Gay Jr. was suspended for eight games during his junior season for "academic fraud and an alleged fight that injured the (Mississippi State) starting quarterback before a bowl game."

That forced Gay Jr. to enter his name into the 2020 NFL Draft, where he was selected in the second round (pick No. 63 overall) by the Kansas City Chiefs. Gay Jr. played four seasons in Kansas City, helping them win Super Bowl LVII and Super Bowl LVIII.

Gay Jr. signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the New Orleans Saints in 2024, but his tenure in the NFC South flopped. Gay Jr. played in 15 games last season, finishing with a career-low 28 tackles (19 solo), two sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and three pass deflections.

Signing Gay Jr. gives Miami another option in the linebacker room. He'll provide veteran depth to a group currently led by Jordyn Brooks, Tyrel Dodson, and the recently signed K.J. Britt.
