Rumors about Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey's potential departure from the team have been swirling for months. Ever since general manager Chris Grier made public in April the Dolphins' plans to move on from Ramsey, a number of teams have emerged as viable suitors for the star defensive back's services.
If Ramsey departs during the offseason, the Dolphins have a number of players – such as Kader Kohou, Storm Duck and Cam Smith – who could step up into larger roles ahead of the 2025 campaign. But it may behoove the team to add some more star power to its cornerback room before training camp begins, with the trade market serving as a resource to find that talent.
The Dolphins should look no further than two-time Super Bowl champion and current Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Jaylen Watson as a potential replacement for Ramsey, according to Pro Football Network's Brandon Austin.
"The former seventh-round pick worked his way into a starting role for Kansas City last season before a broken ankle sidelined him. He returned for the playoffs and even started in the Super Bowl, so durability isn’t a lingering issue. However, the Chiefs added Kristian Fulton in free agency and drafted Nohl Williams," Austin wrote.
"All-Pro Trent McDuffie is set to command at least $13 million on his fifth-year option next year, and the Chiefs may not want to invest heavily in three cornerbacks. Watson is preparing to hit free agency anyway, so they’ll likely want to get something in return instead of letting him walk."
Watson has spent the entirety of his three-year career with the Chiefs, the No. 243 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to select him. He was a member of the Chiefs' back-to-back championship-winning squads in Super Bowl LVII and Super Bowl LVIII, and he has accumulated 114 tackles, one interception, and two sacks as a professional.
Watson spent the first two seasons of his career primarily as a role player, appearing in 16 games each year but starting in only eight total. In his first primetime game as a rookie, he picked off a pass from Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert and returned it for a 99-yard touchdown on Thursday Night Football during Week 2.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid thrust Watson into a starting role at the start of the 2024 season, but he only played in six regular-season games before being placed on injured reserve after breaking his tibia and fibula. He returned for the playoffs and contributed to the Chiefs' unsuccessful run for a three-peat, appearing in both the AFC Championship Game and Super Bowl LIX.
