The Miami Dolphins are making some moves for the future, but it is unclear if they are the right moves.
On Tuesday, the Dolphins and seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey agreed to separate via trade. It is unclear what led to the decision, but Ramsey has likely played his last game as a member of the Dolphins.
In two years and 27 regular-season games as a Dolphin, Ramsey accumulated 82 total tackles, 57 solo tackles, 16 pass breakups, six tackles for loss, five interceptions, and four quarterback hits.
Right before the start of last season, Ramsey and the Dolphins agreed to a three-year; $72.3 million deal. Ramsey has a potential out next off-season with a dead cap of $18.4 million.
The Dolphins are looking to get some good value for some of their stars, including wide receiver Tyreek Hill. Several teams could use a few more of Ramsey’s elite play at cornerback. One team that might be giving Miami what it needs moving forward is the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs currently don’t need much help in man-coverage schemes after signing Kristian Fulton to a two-year, $20 million deal. Fulton joins Trent McDuffie, who had another stellar season last year, accounting for 13 pass breakups and a coverage grade of 80.6, according to Pro Football Focus.
McDuffie is in the final year of his rookie contract where he is set to earn a base salary of $2.6 million. He does have a team option going into next season, but he is set to be 25 when the season starts and he is coming off two All-Pro seasons. He could vie for one of the most expensive contracts for a defensive back in NFL history, something that might create caution for the Chiefs.
The Chiefs might still pay McDuffie, keep Fulton, and trade for Ramsey. This would be an answer to teams with multiple elite receivers, like the Cincinnati Bengals or the Philadelphia Eagles. If there's an elite cornerback on the trade block, the Chiefs are going to be one of the interested teams.
The Dolphins in return get the No. 31 in the 2025 NFL Draft and potentially more in a package deal.
