The Miami Dolphins' Week 2 opponent, the New England Patriots, has some unknowns for Sunday's matchup that could potentially tilt the scales. The Dolphins have their own set of injuries, with what is presumed to be a whole new right side of the offensive line just one game into the year. New England's bumps and bruises, however, boast several key talents of their own.
Cornerback Christian Gonzalez missed Week 1 and did not practice on Wednesday. Pass rushers Harold Landry and Keion White also did not practice — Landry with a foot injury and White due to illness. And right tackle Morgan Moses was also out with a foot injury during Wednesday's session.
The Dolphins should welcome every break they can get in player availability amid their own issues. But Miami's fanbase should hope that New England gets as many of their players out on the field as possible. Not because they should be rooting to tank the season, but rather because we need an accurate assessment of who this Miami football team actually is.
Miami sneaking out a close win against a Patriots team that's banged up in the wrong places doesn't necessarily give us any better idea of who these Dolphins actually are. If this team is destined to flounder in 2025, a potential win against a compromised divisional opponent won't change that. Bring on Gonzalez (it feels increasingly unlikely we will see him, though). Let's get Landry out there after a disruptive debut with New England.
NFL matchups are supposed to be challenging. And the victories are undoubtedly sweeter when you beat a team at its best instead of kicking a team while it's down. Especially for this Dolphins team after such a tough Week 1 showing, there's no consolation in stealing wins that are aided by injuries. If the Dolphins want to punch back and fight with pride for themselves and their coach, let's see it happen against New England with all (or at least most) of their best players suited up.
Miami will certainly get its chances to showcase its pride — sooner rather than later. They've got two games in the next seven days, the second a road trip to Buffalo. Bring it on. Let's find out if Week 1 lied or if this is who the Dolphins are for real.
