Dolphins Working Out RB Jamaal Williams Today

UPDATE: Since this article was published, it was discovered that Alexander Mattison is OUT FOR THE SEASON, and this is the main reason why Miami is working out Jamaal Williams today.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the Miami Dolphins are working out running back Jamaal Williams today.

Alexander Mattison suffered a head and neck injury late in the preseason game against the Bears, leaving Minnesota with only three running backs on the roster at this time. With joint practices and another preseason game with the Lions this week, the Dolphins are looking to add another body.

Mattison is not in the concussion protocol, but it is unknown how serious his injury is and how long he may be out.

Williams is 30 years old and an 8-year NFL veteran.

He has played for the Packers, Lions, and, most recently, the Saints.

In 2024 with the Saints, he played in 14 games, started 1, had only 48 carries on the season for 164 yards and one touchdown. He did have only 3.4 YPC.

2023 was also a quiet year for Williams, where he started four games, had 306 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns, and 2.9 YPC.

In 2022, he led the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns as a member of the Lions.

Mattison has had a strong training camp, and unless his injury is very serious, I wouldn’t expect Williams to be in Miami long, as this may truly just be a training camp body.

If Mattison’s injury is serious, Williams does have a chance to stick around as a 4th running back on this roster.

Rookie running back Ollie Gordon II had a very good preseason game, and if the Mattison injury keeps him out for a bit, expect Gordon to get more work moving forward in the final two preseason games.

For his career, Williams has played in 117 games, started 45, had 32 rushing touchdowns and ran for 4,122 yards.

The 17 touchdowns in one season is a bit of an outlier because other than that season, he has never ran for more than 4 in a season, and that was his rookie year in 2017.
