Don’t let DeMarvion Overshown’s return overshadow the news Cowboys fans have waited months to hear

Monday morning was a good one for Dallas Cowboys. Not only were they able to walk into the office celebrating a 44-22 divisional win over the Washington Commanders but they received positive news on linebacker DeMarvion Overshown.

Overshown is returning to practice on Wednesday after spending the first seven weeks of the season on PUP (Physically Unable to Perform). His return would be massive for the struggling Cowboys defense, but the good news overshadowed other positive news out of Dallas.

According to Nick Harris from Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Cowboys are also opening third-round rookie Shavon Revel Jr.'s 21-day practice window on Wednesday. Like Overshown, Revel Jr. will be able to practice. He will have 21 days to be activated on the 53-man roster. Otherwise, he would land on season-ending Injured Reserve.

Shavon Revel Jr.'s return could shake things up on the Cowboys secondary

Cowboys fans have patiently awaited the debut of rookie cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. His knee injury is the reason why most attribute his fall into the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft and after preaching patience, Dallas is set to receive a much-needed defensive boost.

Revel Jr. is largely perceived as an outside cornerback. Currently, the Cowboys have mixed and matched their corners. With Trevon Diggs healthy, it's been he and DaRon Bland outside with Reddy Steward at nickel. In Week 7's win over the Commanders, however, Bland stayed inside while Kaiir Elam and Trikweze Bridges played outside (Diggs was out due to the concussion protocol).

Revel Jr.'s best chance at landing a starting gig is to replace Elam and have Bland take over the slot full-time. However, I expect the coaching staff to treat the rookie's return with patience and not thrust him into a starting role before he proves himself.

Expert analysis on what to expect from Shavon Revel Jr.

Travis May scouting pre-draft scouting report on Revel Jr:

The small body of work that we do have on Revel is extremely promising. He allowed a career passer rating when targeted around 60 (not much better than a standard incomplete pass) and a completion percentage below 44%.

In Revel’s peak season he defended nearly 25% of the passes that were sent his way in coverage with a pass break up or interception. It would be nice to have some verified athletic testing numbers and see more games against top competition, but his length, discipline, and consistency at outside corner looks pretty undeniable. – Travis May

Schottenheimer makes injury updates even better

To sweeten the news, following the reports about Overshown and Revel Jr., Schottenheimer added starting center Cooper Beebe is also expected to have his 21-day practice window openn this week.

Additionally, he said WR Jonathan Mingo is expected to be activated to the 53-man roster this week, which would mean he's set to play on Sunday versus the Denver Broncos.
