Rookie quarterback Drake Maye isn't a fan of not being under center for the New England Patriots in Week 1. However, he responded to head coach Jerod Mayo's decision to start Jacoby Brissett like a veteran, taking the high road while admitting his competitive side makes it tough not to play.
As Khari Thompson of Boston.com reported, Maye "did not seem disappointed by the decision," which the No. 3 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft also stated while addressing the topic on Thursday.
“I wouldn’t say disappointed, obviously I want to play,” Maye said. “That’s the competitive edge in me. At the same time, I understand the situation. Jacoby has been in the offense and gotten the reps with ones all camp. So, I can’t say I’m disappointed but at the same time I want to be playing.”
Maye explained that although he's the No. 2 quarterback, his mindset and approach won't change. But the former North Carolina signal-caller also said he's rooting for Brissett and will "keep the vibes in the quarterback room up," as Thompson detailed.
“I’m still one play away, so just have to be ready for all circumstances and I’m here to help Jacoby and keep the vibes in the quarterback room up because nothing is going to change. I’m still rooting for him and cheering for him." Maye stated.
Maye outplayed Brissett, who saw very limited action, along with fellow quarterbacks Bailey Zappe and Joe Milton during the 2024 preseason. He completed 21 of 34 attempts (61.8 percent) for 192 yards and one touchdown, adding 32 rushing yards and one additional score.
Brissett only threw 14 passes during preseason play, completing five of them (35.7 percent) for 36 yards and one interception.
The big question for Mayo and the Patriots is how long they'll stick with Brissett if the season starts on the wrong foot. New England plays three of its first four games on the road, facing the Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers, with the lone home game coming against the Seattle Seahawks.
It's tough to envision Maye remaining on the bench in Week 5 or 6 against the Miami Dolphins or Houston Texans if Brissett struggles and the Patriots go winless in their first four games. Maye's time is coming, and it may come sooner than later in the upcoming season.
