The development of Drake Maye going into Year 2 is paramount for the New England Patriots’ success in 2025. The former North Carolina QB seems to be pushing all of the right buttons though.
Under new head coach Mike Vrabel, the Patriots are going to attempt to reset the culture. Not only that, Josh McDaniels is back, again, and will lead the offense.
So far, Maye’s taken to it quite well. Heck, the quarterback was actually disappointed this portion of the offseason is over and can’t wait to get back for training camp.
“I think it’s feeling good,” Maye said. “I think we’re catching the stride. Trying to get as many reps out there as possible. I think you got to take the meetings and what you learn from when you do get a chance to run the plays, just take it and take it in the next time you run it. It’s all the same concepts in the league, but it’s different verbiage.
“Mostly same guys running them, but just feeling out how they run it, timing and just getting different concepts. I think it’s been good. I think I’m starting to find a stride. I’m bummed out we’re about to leave, but it’s fun.”
In 12 games last season, Maye only mustered a 3-9 record as a starter but had his moments. He finished the year with 2,276 yards, 15 touchdowns, 10 interceptions and a 66.6% completion percentage.
While at the Pro Bowl, Maye spoke to SiriusXM NFL Radio about working with Vrabel during the offseason. It sounds like the partnership is going to be a positive one in 2025.
“[Vrabel] reached out to me, and we got on the phone. He’s been awesome. Obviously, a guy who’s done it, played in the league, and won a Super Bowl,” Maye told Sirius XM, per the Patriots’ official website. “You have a respect for what he’s done and seen what he’s done. I think the biggest thing is he’s been a head coach and knows what it’s like. So excited to get up to New England and get things going.”
Maye also talked about working with McDaniels. Changing offenses from year to the next is never easy, but this could be beneficial long term for Maye.
“Coach McDaniels, obviously what he’s done and the success he’s had, I’m fortunate to be able to have a guy come in who has done it at a high level and learn from him coaching one of the best ever — the best ever in my opinion — Tom [Brady],” Maye said. If Maye starts to take off like Brady under McDaniels, Patriot fans might be ready to celebrate a few more championships.
