Former New Orleans Saints and future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees recently gave his thoughts on the Saints having drafted Louisville QB Tyler Shough in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Brees participated in an interview at the opening of Surge Entertainment in Metarie, Louisiana and he conveyed his thoughts on the franchise having selected Shough.
"I've seen what the fans have seen, ya know. I haven't really gone deep into his college film. I think what's the most impressive to me is his adversity," Brees said.
Yes, Shough has endured a plethora of injuries throughout his six-year collegiate career. The 25-year old rookie had stints at Oregon, Texas Tech and wrapped up his final season at Louisville. Shough suffered a broken left collarbone in 2021, re-injured that same collarbone in 2022 and fractured his left fibula in 2023.
Shough's best statistical season came in 2024 under Jeff Brohm's offense, as he garnered 3,195 passing yards, 23 touchdowns and six interceptions. The 6-foot-5 pass thrower completed 62.7% of his passes and averaged 8.2 yards per pass attempt. Shough finished fifth in passing statistics in the ACC last season.
Shough has the prototypical size of what a franchise quarterback should be built like. However, it is head-scratching to hear Brees not only admit he hasn't watched his film yet, but the first thing he mentioned when asked about Shough was his battle through injuries instead of his ability to play quarterback.
Brees began to compare Shough to Saints utility player (QB/TE) Taysom Hill, as Hill also endured ample injuries in college. Hill suffered injuries to his knee, elbow, leg and foot. Yes, there are similar in that aspect, but Hill was never drafted with the expectation to be a franchise quarterback. Shough despite his attributes, has not exhibited flashes throughout his college career that he can be a solid starting quarterback in the NFL.
Brees wrapped the interview with a mind-boggling statement regarding the Saints quarterback room.
"I'm not giving anybody the job right now, I know we drafted Tyler Shough, but I'm sure [Jake] Haener and [Spencer] Rattler have something to say about that."
Brees making that statement conveys that he doesn't exactly see Shough as a potential franchise quarterback at this juncture. Of course, someone in the Saints front office thought he would be a better option than someone like Shedeur Sanders, who was taken in the fifth round by the Browns.
The Saints have to figure out who will start between Rattler, Haener and Shough, who will be 26 in September, by the time Week 1 rolls around. However, Brees' comments certainly don't scream optimistic after the abrupt retirement of Derek Carr.
