Eagles 'close' to trading QB Carson Wentz?

On Friday morning, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported that the Philadelphia Eagles have discussed trading alleged wantaway quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts.

Such talk is only going to heat up as Super Bowl LV approaches.

Les Bowen and Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer have since reported that the Eagles are "close" to trading Wentz, the 28-year-old signal-caller who fell beneath rookie Jalen Hurts on the depth chart during the 2020 season. Wentz continues to be linked with the Colts and current Indianapolis head coach Frank Reich, his former offensive coordinator with the Eagles.

Bowen and McLane noted that Reich is expected to hire former Eagles quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Press Taylor, who reportedly is close with Wentz after the pair worked together for multiple years.

A trade likely benefits all parties in this scenario. Longtime veteran Philip Rivers recently retired and left the Colts without a proven starter, and it's understandable Wentz would crave reunions with Reich and Taylor and also a fresh start that wouldn't involve competing for a job with a younger prospect who built favor with teammates during the second half of this past campaign.

Bowen and McLane added that "Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has placed a high asking price on Wentz," but it's unknown if Roseman will receive anything close to his desired value for a player who has made it clear he wants out this offseason.
