Eagles copy Jahan Dotson playbook with preseason WR trade to help Jalen Hurts

Last year, the Philadelphia Eagles traded for Washington Commanders wide receiver Jahan Dotson. It appears Eagles general manager Howie Roseman wanted to get back at finding a wide receiver before the regular season for a second consecutive season.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the Eagles have made a trade with the Houston Texans to acquire wide receiver John Metchie. ESPN Texans reporter DJ Bien-Aime added that the Eagles and Texans would swap Day 3 picks and Houston would acquire tight end Harrison Bryant.

Not only is this the second time the Eagles traded for a wide receiver before the season, but it's the second trade this year between Philly and the Texans. C.J. Gardner-Johnson was sent to Houston in exchange for guard Kenyon Green.

What are the Eagles getting in John Metchie?

Metchie was a former second-round pick of the Texans back in 2022. He missed his first season after being diagnosed with Leukemia. The former Alabama receiver has slowly worked his way back onto the field over the last two years, as he has made 40 receptions for 412 yards and one touchdown in 29 games.

He won't kill defenders with his speed, but he is an elite route runner who can make great players. A smart, instinctive receiver who just needs more time to play in NFL games. Additionally, his story is a great one to follow, as he has fought his way back onto the field after his Leukemia diagnosis. A feel-good story for the Eagles to have.

The wide receiver room takes an interesting turn with the addition of more talent. Darius Cooper has been a standout at camp, with Terrace Marshall Jr. and Elijah Cooks having great moments. Johnny Wilson and Ainias Smith are in their second years, but feel like locks for the roster.

At the top of the depth chart is A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Dotson will be the WR3 on the roster.

There will undoubtedly be some drama entering the final preseason game of 2025, and fans will see where Metchie fits into the offense with quarterback Jalen Hurts. It's safe to say, though, that Hurts has all the help he needs to help the Eagles defend their Super Bowl title.
