Eagles Could Reunite With TE Zach Ertz?

In the event a move on that front winds up taking place, EJ Smith of PHLY Sports reports Zach Ertz could be a name to watch. Nothing is imminent with respect to an Eagles-Ertz arrangement, per Smith. Nevertheless, he adds the 13-year veteran would welcome a return to where his career began with a potential Philadelphia reunion “on the table.”

Ertz recently received medical clearance for football activities, and the nine-month benchmark from his ACL tear is approaching. It is often around that time when teams evaluate players before deciding on a free agent deal based on the progress of their recovery. Ertz said in April he would be open to a Philadelphia deal for 2026.

The Eagles still have Dallas Goedert atop their tight end depth chart after a one-year deal was worked out in March. Stowers was selected in the second round as a potential Goedert replacement with respect to starting duties in the future, but his injury could result in missed time or a reduced workload early in the campaign. Philadelphia also has Johnny Mundt and EJ Jenkins on the roster at this point, although Smith notes Jenkins could be viewed more as a placeholder for an addition over the coming days.

It will be interesting to see if Ertz, 35, proves to be that outside arrival. The three-time Pro Bowler served as a full-time starter during his Commanders tenure, totaling 116 catches and 11 touchdowns over that 30-game span. Ertz could be counted on as a reliable pass-catching presence deep into his career depending on his ability to recover in full from his ACL tear. No known setbacks have occurred during his rehab process.

The Eagles entered Monday with roughly $22MM in cap space. That figure will change over the coming days as practice squads are assembled and other roster tweaks take place, but that could make a low-cost Ertz pact feasible provided a mutual interest in a deal continues to exist during the build-up to Week 1.
