The Philadelphia Eagles pulled off a pretty shocking trade, as they sent Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens and a 2027 seventh-round pick to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick.
Jurgens has struggled recently, but he was a huge piece to the puzzle when the Eagles had the best offensive line in football and won the Super Bowl just two seasons ago. So, some were surprised by Philadelphia’s willingness to make the move.
Shortly after the trade, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman provided some insight into the decision to move on from Jurgens, and the process that led to it. Roseman explained that the Eagles weren’t necessarily looking to move Jurgens, but an opportunity presented itself and at that point Roseman felt like pulling the trigger on a deal would be in the best interest of the franchise.
“We weren’t looking to move Cam,” Roseman said. Obviously, the Ravens have been looking for a center… Kind of told them wasn’t anything we were looking to do. Over the last 24 hours, it got to the point where we felt like it could be a win-win for them. Obviously, getting a player who’s been a two-time Pro Bowl center and obviously for us, being able to get the picks we’re able to get, and use that money also to sign players.”
Jurgens’ contributions to the Eagles will always be remembered. But, football is a business, and sometimes in business you have to be proactive. Getting two draft picks, including a second-rounder, is good value for a player who appears to be on a downward trajectory, and Roseman recognized that.
Plus, he’s also bullish on Jurgens’ replacement, and that might have contributed to his willingness to make the deal.
Roseman thinks that the center position in Philadelphia is in good hands with second-year center Drew Kendall, who the Eagles selected in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. That made moving on from Jurgens an easier decision.
“[I] had a chance to watch Drew [Kendall] here play center is doing a nice job. [We] have a young player there,” Roseman said. “…We’ve had success in the fifth round, plus the money, plus Drew playing, we felt like we were getting four players for one, and just felt like for us, you know, with all these guys that we got coming up, a lot on the defensive side of the ball that we want to re-sign and want to extend, felt like that that was a good situation.”
Kendall appears prepared to step into the role, but only time will tell. One thing is for sure, though: Philadelphia’s offensive line looks a whole lot different today than it did just a couple of days ago following the trade of Jurgens and Lane Johnson’s retirement.
