Eagles' Jordan Mailata gets brutally honest on facing Browns' Myles Garrett

Philadelphia Eagles left tackle Jordan Mailata went up against Cleveland Browns star pass-rusher Myles Garrett during joint practices between the clubs this week.

While speaking with reporters following Thursday's session, Mailata revealed that he will "giggle" while reviewing film of how he handled the Garrett assignment.

"I’ll be honest," Mailata said about facing Garrett, The Athletic's Brooks Kubena and Zach Berman shared. "I’m just, you know, like, 'What the (expletive)? I did my (expletive) job and yet I still got beat. How is that even possible? How is he still at below my knees, and he’s bending the corner?' He starts the rush in a four-point stance, and by the time he’s four yards upfield, he’s still at that same point, and it’s kind of like, what am I supposed to do there? Just jump on him? None of that’s possible. He’ll just carry me to the QB."

Mailata is hardly the only tackle to be left baffled by Garrett's on-the-field abilities. Per StatMuse, only T.J. Watt of the Pittsburgh Steelers has accumulated more sacks (108) than Garrett (102.5) since the Browns made him the first overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. Garrett has a reputation for routinely attracting double-teams during games, and the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year could once again be a favorite to win the award in 2025.

"The guy’s a freak," Mailata continued while speaking about Garrett. "...When you go up against the best, you’re able to learn from the next rep. It was kind of just like this lose-win, lose-lose-lose-win, lose-lose-lose. That’s just how it felt like. I just kept on saying, 'Keep pushing for the next play, just do your job and then we’ll fix it later.'"

Garrett is worth every penny of the four-year, $160M contract extension that included $123.5M guaranteed he accepted to stay with the Browns in March. That said, Cleveland would like Garrett to be a better leader behind the scenes and slow down while on the highway.

For now, Mailata seems glad he won't have to deal with Garrett again anytime soon.

"I can’t answer that," Mailata responded when asked how a tackle could stop Garrett at the line, per Dan Labbe of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "Not because I don’t want to. I just don’t really know the answer. ...There’s no one like Myles. You can’t apply what Myles does to anyone else."
