Everything about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was near perfect during the 2024 season. From Hurts protecting the football to winning Super Bowl MVP, it would be hard to believe there are any questions about him.
Unfortunately, that's not the case. ESPN senior NFL reporter Dan Graziano is asking one question that looms around the quarterbacks in each of the 32 NFL teams. Graziano asked one question about Hurts: "How will the Eagles' annual coordinator change affect Jalen Hurts this time?"
"The 2022 Eagles reached the Super Bowl with Shane Steichen as offensive coordinator, but then Steichen got hired to coach the Colts, and Hurts and the Philly offense regressed badly in 2023 under Brian Johnson. The Eagles brought in Kellen Moore last season, built one of the all-time great run games and won the Super Bowl as a result. But now Moore is coach of the Saints, and Kevin Patullo has been promoted to offensive coordinator.
Underestimating Hurts is clearly a foolish endeavor at this point, but he and the team are surely hoping things go better than they did the last time they promoted from within to fill the coordinator spot."
There hasn't been a quarterback who has gone through more offensive coordinator than Hurts has. Here are his offensive coordinators/play callers during his time in Philadelphia:
That doesn't even include the fact that Hurts had a different play caller and/or offensive coordinator every year in college at Alabama and Oklahoma. One thing Hurts has been good at is adaptability.
Entering the 2025 season, Patullo takes over as the offensive coordinator, but this isn't the same as it was when Johnson held the same position in 2023. Patullo has been Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni's right-hand man and a key part of the game planning for the offense, alongside Moore, last year. Johnson was simply the quarterback coach with not as much experience.
There might be some changes to the offense, but it won't default much from what was being run in 2024. The Eagles will still be dominant on the offensive line with more run than pass, but give Hurts his shots down the field.
Last year's offense helped Hurts have arguably the best season of his career. The passing yards and touchdowns might not be there, but he only threw five interceptions, had a career-high in passer rating (103.7), and a career-high in completion percentage (68.7%).
By how Hurts has been looking at offseason workouts, it sounds like the smart, accurate quarterback fans saw a season ago is still going strong. A new play caller might be an adjustment, but Hurts has been here before and has succeeded. For now, this is not as big of a problem as some might think.
