Last season was one for the history books for the Philadelphia Eagles, who went 14-3 and won the Super Bowl for the second time in franchise history. However, a season after a Super Bowl is always the most critical concern.
The Eagles have had a tremendous amount of success over the last eight years, with seven of those seasons resulting in winning records. It has included three Super Bowl appearances and two Lombardi Trophies, which were taken home to Philadelphia.
Typically, after a Super Bowl, teams hit a wall, coming off the high or low of the game. It may be one of the biggest concerns for the Eagles and a question worth asking.
FanSided writer Lou Scataglia's recent article tackles the one burning question for each of the NFC teams. Scataglia had his question for the Eagles surrounding their response to the Super Bowl win: "Super Bowl hangover on the horizon?"
"It would not shock me if the Eagles did endure a Super Bowl hangover, as that happened to them after making the Super Bowl in 2022."
In franchise history, not all seasons after the Super Bowl have been bad for Philadelphia, but none have resulted in repeat championships. The Eagles have appeared in four Super Bowls before 2024, with each season having a different outcome and aftermath.
The good news is that history shows that the Eagles are more likely to make the playoffs. Only once did they miss the playoffs the following season, and that was due to starting quarterback Donovan McNabb's injury and wide receiver Terrell Owens' off-the-field antics.
What history does show is that the Eagles' record has decreased in each of those seasons. Looking at the 2005, 2018, and 2023 seasons, those offseasons saw Philadelphia lose key contributors in free agency, which hindered their consistency.
The 2023 season would be one the Eagles would like to move on from after losing to the Kansas City Chiefs the first time in the Super Bowl. A 10-1 start was derailed by losing six of their last seven games and getting blown out by the Buccaneers in the playoffs. That was a hard lesson learned, resolved by an improved coaching staff and getting the culture back on track.
It was the same this offseason, as the Eagles lost Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, Brandon Graham, Darius Slay, Mekhi Becton, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson for various reasons. These were guys who helped set the foundation of the team over the last few seasons.
This season will show Eagles fans how the young players will perform on the field. Philadelphia hopes to avoid the Super Bowl hangover at all costs.
