The Philadelphia Eagles were embarrassed on “Thursday Night Football” by the New York Giants, suffering their worst loss of the season, 34-17, and marking the second game in a row where the offense scored only 17 points.
Dysfunctional and unable to figure out why they’re playing so poorly, the Eagles seemingly have no answers on how to fix things.
The Eagles' offense has been the topic of discussion since Week 1, as they have not looked like the team that had a top-10 offense (eighth) in the sport last season, as well as the NFL’s leading rusher, Saquon Barkley (2,005 yards and 13 touchdowns).
The Eagles have dropped to 29th in the league in total offense (275.5 yards per game) and have a terrible passing game (28th, 179.2 yards) despite boasting one of the top receivers in the league in A.J. Brown, who is having one of the worst years of his career. Held to just one touchdown on 45 targets, Brown has just one game this season where he went over 100-plus yards receiving (109 against the Los Angeles Rams).
The struggles have also affected the running game, with Barkley not having produced a game with 100-plus yards rushing through six contests. His 3.4 yards per rush are a career worst outside of 2020, when he only played in two games.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts, individually, has been fine, throwing for 1,172 yards (12th in the NFL) with eight passing touchdowns (tied for ninth), and one interception. He has been even better running, tallying 195 yards rushing and scoring five rushing touchdowns. This has him second in the NFL behind Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, who has six scores on the ground.
The Eagles have to get back to the offense they had last year and be less “predictable,” as offensive lineman Lane Johnson put it, which is the key to helping turn things back around.
After being called out by one of his top offensive players, Patullo needs to devise different schemes and be more creative, which is what Eagles Hall of Famer and former Super Bowl Champion Seth Joyner said needed to be done. Playing more team-oriented football and designing creative plays can help end this skid when the Eagles play the 3-2 Minnesota Vikings in Week 7.
