In the first transaction since the Philadelphia Eagles' loss to the division rival New York Giants, the Eagles have made a move at cornerback.
No, the Eagles haven't cut Kelee Ringo or Adoree' Jackson, nor have they traded for a stud CB2. Instead, the team announced they have released Eli Ricks and replaced him with Tariq Castro-Fields on the practice squad.
Ricks has been on and off the Eagles' practice squad during the first six weeks of the season. Ricks has been with Philadelphia since 2023, coming out of Alabama as an undrafted free agent. Ricks has appeared in 23 games for the Eagles (in 2023 and 2024), recording 21 tackles and three pass deflections. He has not appeared in any games so far in 2025.
Castro-Fields rejoins the Eagles after being waived with an injury designation at the conclusion of training camp. Originally out of Penn State in 2022 as a sixth-round pick, to the 49ers, Castro-Fields was released by San Francisco, only to be signed by the Commanders. Castro-Fields would bounce between the practice squad and active roster for the 2022 and 2023 seasons, only to be finally released at the conclusion of training camp in 2024.
Castro-Fields would be claimed by the Panthers only to be waived in October of 2024. He'd join the Eagles for the first time last October, earning a Super Bowl ring with the team on their practice squad. Castro-Fields has primarily been a special teams player at this stage of his NFL career; however, he did start one game for the Commanders in 2023.
With some roster reshuffling, it appears that Howie Roseman is looking to shake things up on the back end of the roster. The Eagles do have one roster spot open with Za'Darius Smith's abrupt retirement, and could be elevating a practice squad player to his spot on the active roster. With that, a possibility exists for Ricks to remain in Philadelphia once a practice squad spot opens up.
