Eagles still face one lingering issue with rookie before training camp

The Philadelphia Eagles took care of one of the biggest questions before training camp with the signing of first-round pick linebacker Jihaad Campbell, but they are still not out of the woods yet.

On Wednesday, Campbell and the Eagles agreed to a four-year, $14.9 million fully guaranteed contract. The deal does have a fifth-year option the team can pick up.

There is still the concern with Campbell's injury and when he is going to return as that will be a headline entering training camp. One other rookie though has an unresolved situation that needs to be figured out before training camp.

Second-round pick Andrew Mukuba still needs to be signed

After the Eagles selected Campbell in the first round, they stayed on defense with their second round pick, Texas safety Andrew Mukuba. Philadelphia saw Mukuba as an eventual replacement for C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who the team traded to the Houston Texans.

He's coming off a strong season with the Longhorns last year, as he finished as a third-team All-SEC selection, helped by him nabbing five interceptions, tied for the fourth most in the nation. Mukuba also had 69 tackles, seven pass breakups, four tackles for loss, and one forced fumble in 15 games.

The only problem now is that Mukuba has not been signed to a contract. He's the only Eagles rookie who has yet to sign a contract. Mukuba is one of several second round picks who haven't signed as two others signed with a fully guarantee contract.

It seems unlikely that a contract won't get signed as Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has been good about getting rookies under contract before training camp. Even if it needs to be a fully guaranteed contract, the organization has been high on Mukuba and believe he can be an instant contributor.

Going into training camp, Mukuba will be battling with Sydney Brown and Tristin McCollum for one of the starting safety jobs. Reed Blankenship already has secured one of them.

Mukuba has been participating in offseason workouts with the Eagles so the good news is the lack of a contract being signed hasn't affected his preparation for the season. The team is off for the next month plus so there is still time to get a deal done.

Philadelphia would love to get a deal done and Mukuba would as well. Expect the news to come soon enough, but for now, Eagles fans will wait in anticipation to see when the ink will touch the contract.
