Eagles Urged to Make Unthinkable Saquon Barkley Trade

The Philadelphia Eagles face growing questions about their direction after a 2-3 start, and one outside proposal has placed star running back Saquon Barkley at the center of a potential blockbuster deal with the Seattle Seahawks.

Cody Williams of FanSided outlined a scenario in which Seattle would pursue Barkley to address its struggling ground game, citing the Seahawks’ 3-2 record and ongoing offensive inconsistencies.

The Eagles dropped to 2-3 following a 19-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London, a game in which Barkley sat out with a hamstring injury suffered the previous week.

Philadelphia’s offensive line has absorbed significant blows, including the retirement of right tackle Lane Johnson and the trade of Cam Jurgens, leaving the unit thinner than in recent seasons.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Eagles are sorting through roster and cap decisions involving Johnson amid those changes, though the organization has not signaled a broader sell-off.

Williams suggested Seattle could offer a 2026 third-round pick, a 2026 seventh-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick for Barkley, potentially adjusting the package with a player if needed.

That framework draws from the 2022 trade that sent Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers to the San Francisco 49ers, which involved a second-, third- and fourth-round selection in 2023 plus a 2024 fifth-rounder, with less overall compensation projected here due to Barkley’s age of 29.

Seattle’s run game ranks near the bottom of the league, with Williams citing an Expected Points Added of -0.26 per rush that ties the team with the Las Vegas Raiders and trails only the Green Bay Packers at -0.34.

The Seahawks reached the Super Bowl last season with a balanced approach rather than heavy reliance on quarterback Sam Darnold in the passing game, making a proven back a potential fit in a win-now window.

From Philadelphia’s side, Barkley’s contract runs through 2028 after an extension, carrying a roughly $9.9 million cap hit in 2026 and generating limited immediate savings if moved, according to public contract data.

The Eagles sit second in the NFC East behind the New York Giants and have yet to establish consistent offensive production, with Barkley totaling 182 rushing yards on 36 carries through four games before the injury.

Trading a 29-year-old running back could return multiple mid-to-high draft picks while allowing the front office to address other roster areas without a full teardown.

Philadelphia rushed for just 22 yards in the London game without Barkley, underscoring both his value and the current depth limitations in the backfield. Williams framed the idea as aggressive for Seattle but plausible if the Eagles continue to trend downward and prioritize future assets over the present.

Whether the Eagles entertain such discussions remains speculative, but the combination of early-season results, line injuries and Barkley’s remaining years makes the concept a topic of external analysis.
