ESPN might have a Pat McAfee problem on its hands.
McAfee signed a lucrative deal with ESPN back in 2019. As part of his multi-year agreement, he makes weekly appearances on "College GameDay." While some fans believe he's the biggest draw the show has, others find his personality to be incredibly exhausting. Earlier this week, the former NFL punter reposted countless harsh comments about himself on social media.
According to McAfee, he's used to dealing with hate from the public because there are “old white people” at ESPN who aren't fond of him.
“I just got done with a little morning workout. It was nice to read those comments. I’d like to let all you old f—s know I hate you too. Never got along with that class of people, teachers, principals, you name it. Since I’m a kid, always hated me, it’s kind of a part of life now,” McAfee said in a video posted on Instagram.
"The thing about old white people and old ESPN people – those are really the people that hate me the most at this stage of life. Now, granted, there’s some other groups that certainly have threatened my life on a pretty regular basis. I’d say they hate me too. But throughout the entirety old whites and the old ESPN people over the last like three years have really hated me. That’s who all the producers are of GameDay too. So now you know that’s it’s been a fun run. College football is great. Cheers! Have a great day.”
According to Front Office Sports, some ESPN employees are tired of McAfee's "public whining." They believe his behavior is unprofessional and paints a bad image for the network.
"Totally unnecessary. Grow up and talk to these people to make it better. You are not a victim," a source told Front Office Sports. "Everyone is bending over backwards to put you in a good position—and these same people are incentivized for you to succeed."
Another source for Front Office Sports called McAfee an "entitled diva."
There's no question McAfee is capable of firing up the crowd on "College GameDay." At the end of the day though, ESPN doesn't want negative stories like this coming to light.
We'll see if McAfee issues an apology for his recent remarks.
