As recently as Thursday, the Tennessee Titans appeared prepared to hold onto the first pick of the 2025 NFL Draft so they could select Miami's Cam Ward, the consensus top quarterback in this year's class.
However, ESPN's Matt Miller suggested Friday that some may have rushed to assume Tennessee's alleged draft intentions.
"The way I hear it," Miller said, "nothing is settled with the Titans, even though they didn't sign a veteran QB in free agency. ...The Titans have ample time to make a call on whether Miami's Cam Ward or Colorado's Shedeur Sanders could be their guy under center. But trading the pick or deciding to instead go with a non-quarterback, such as Colorado receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter or Penn State edge-rusher Abdul Carter, are seemingly still in play."
Recent updates offered by Miller and NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated indicated that new Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi and head coach Brian Callahan haven't wholly slammed the door shut on accepting a so-called "Godfather offer" for the draft's first pick. The Cleveland Browns (pick No. 2), New York Giants (No. 3), Las Vegas Raiders (No. 6), New York Jets (No. 7) and New Orleans Saints (No. 9) could all theoretically be interested in making a deal with the Titans before April 24.
That said, ESPN's Jordan Reid shared that "many sources around the league are preparing for" the Titans to take Ward at No. 1.
"Tennessee's moves in free agency — such as signing left tackle Dan Moore Jr. and adding reliable veteran guard Kevin Zeitler — and the fact it hasn't created any competition for Will Levis point to the Titans keeping the pick and drafting a QB," Reid added.
NFL insider Josina Anderson reported that "the Titans would like to transition" away from Levis, a 2023 second-round draft pick, this offseason.
"Ward is a strong favorite to be the first overall pick," ESPN's Field Yates added for Friday's article. "... [The Titans are] left with a thin quarterback room that doesn't have an obvious option to start Week 1. Many people around the NFL now believe Ward is bound to be the No. 1 selection — though there's still the possibility that the Titans could receive a trade offer too good to refuse."
One could assume that Borgonzi wants it known he's still open for business if a different team wants to give up multiple valuable assets for the right to draft Ward. It also sounds like the Titans will happily take Ward at No. 1 if no club meets their asking price for the pick over the next month.
