Aaron Rodgers’ first season with the Pittsburgh Steelers brings renewed optimism, but ESPN has identified the offensive line as the key factor that will shape their 2025 campaign. With a ceiling of 11-6 and a floor of 6-11, the team’s success will heavily depend on how well the line protects their 41-year-old quarterback.

Last season, Pittsburgh’s offensive line struggled , allowing 49 sacks, one of the highest totals in the league. While young talents like Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu have shown promise, their inexperience raises concerns. Rodgers himself has emphasized the importance of the unit, calling them “the policemen on the field” and urging them to step up during training camp.

Pittsburgh has leaned on veteran additions across the roster to provide stability and leadership. Players like Isaac Seumalo and Andrus Peat are expected to anchor the line and mentor younger teammates. However, questions remain about whether this blend of youth and experience can create the consistency needed to compete in a tough AFC North.

Rodgers has already made his expectations clear, pushing the offensive line to not only protect him but also to establish a physical presence. His leadership has been evident, with teammates responding to his calls for accountability. This dynamic will be critical as Pittsburgh is going to face early tests against elite pass rushers.

Rodgers’ first season in Pittsburgh will be dictated by one key factor. This is detailed more in an analysis by Brook Pryor for ESPN.

Though Mike Tomlin (famously without a losing season) is the ultimate X factor in elevating his team’s floor every year, this Steelers season will be largely dictated by the unit tasked with protecting 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers. Last year, the Steelers’ offensive line gave up 49 sacks, among the most in the league.

The group, led by second-year center Zach Frazier, has more experience, but tackles Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu are essentially entering their first seasons playing at their positions in the NFL. Jones struggled at times at right tackle the past two years, but he enters this season at his natural left tackle position, while Fautanu is at right after missing most of last season with injury.

Pittsburgh’s roster construction also highlights the team’s commitment to a balanced offense. With skilled receivers and a solid running back group, the offensive line’s ability to create opportunities will dictate how effectively the team can execute their game plan.

If the offensive line meets Rodgers’ high standards, Pittsburgh has the tools to make a deep playoff run. However, any lapse in protection could derail their season and waste the potential of their veteran quarterback.
