The Seattle Seahawks were routinely linked in summer reports and rumors with San Francisco 49ers veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo as journeyman Geno Smith and 2019 second-round draft pick Drew Lock were competing for the right to serve as the replacement for Russell Wilson, who was traded from the Seahawks to the Denver Broncos in March.
Seattle never made a serious move for Garoppolo, and head coach Pete Carroll eventually named Smith his starter over Lock for at least the Week 1 "Monday Night Football" home game versus none other than Wilson and the Broncos.
That decision has thus far worked out well, as Smith completed 23-of-28 pass attempts for 195 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the 17-16 win over Denver. Shortly after the game, ESPN analyst and former NFL safety Ryan Clark used a "SportsCenter" appearance alongside Scott Van Pelt to curiously take a shot at Lock.
"Here’s what’s very important about this play," Clark explained about a moment during the game, per Jenna Lemoncelli of the New York Post. "I want you all to look at this guy right here. That guy is Drew Lock. As long as Drew Lock is standing in that place [on the sidelines], because Geno Smith is playing very well, that’s the best case scenario for the Seattle Seahawks."
Van Pelt pointed out that Clark did Lock "dirty" during the segment for no reason, in particular.
"I’m just saying, he’s doing a good job doing what he needs to be doing," Clark responded.

Lock made 21 starts and 24 appearances during his three-season Broncos tenure. He posted an 8-13-0 record and completed 59.3 percent of his 710 pass attempts for 4,740 yards with 25 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.
As for Smith, he seems cemented atop the Seattle depth chart heading into this coming Sunday's matchup at the 0-1 San Francisco 49ers.
