Earlier today, Chicago Bears practice started with some very unfortunate news around Coby Bryant.
At 9:25 AM CT, Adam Hoge posted on X that, “Coby Bryant just went down grabbing his left knee during a 1-on-1 rep vs Cole Kmet. He was clearly emotional as he got on a cart under his own power.”
Without any other context up to that point, that's obviously extremely worrisome for Chicago and their fans. Bryant was a big offseason addition who the Bears brought in on a three-year deal worth 40 million dollars.
In an ideal world, the Bears would have a duo of Bryant and rookie Dillon Thieneman starting for most of the year. It’s not as if the Bears just drafted a safety and added Bryant for no reason either, this is to help combat the loss of Jaquan Brisker as well as Kevin Byard III.
That said, at 11:29 AM, Underdog NFL made a post on X citing the Up & Adams show, which is hosted by Kay Adams, saying this:
“Rome Odunze said S Coby Bryant (knee) ‘should be fine’ after suffering injury in practice on Monday.”
Again, up to that point, there was no official timeline yet on the injury or even really any specifics, but this is very optimistic. After such a scary update early on in the day, to hear this come from teammate Rome Odunze was good for Bears fans.
Finally, at the time this article was being written, this was the last and most important update on the matter.
At 1:22 PM, per Adam Schefter on X, “Bryant is expected to be sidelined 8-10 weeks due to a hyperextended knee, bone bruise and small fracture that he suffered at today’s practice, per sources. No surgery is expected to be needed.”
With the NFL season so close, this is not what Bears fans want to hear. At the same time, it certainly could have been worse. The biggest positive from this report is the fact that Bryant won't need surgery, which is a very good thing.
Injuries before the season starts are always extremely disappointing, but to hear that Bryant is only out 8-10 weeks and that he’ll avoid surgery is a good thing, relative to the other alternatives.
