Caleb Williams has turned heads since returning from a three-game absence. The Chicago Bears star is also considered by many as an MVP candidate, and ex-NFL quarterback Chase Daniel argued his case for the award.
Williams sustained a hamstring injury in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings. He returned to action in Week 6 versus the Atlanta Falcons and completed 30-of-36 passes for 305 yards and one touchdown. The 2024 Heisman Trophy winner followed it up with 22-of-33 completions for 308 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions last Thursday against the New England Patriots. More importantly, the Bears have won back-to-back games, including the 30-24 Week 7 victory.
Meanwhile, Daniel entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2009. He bounced around the league until 2022. The Missouri product hung his cleats up for good as a one-time Super Bowl champion and with 74 regular-season games under his belt.
Daniel spoke highly of Williams for returning strong. He also discussed the 24-year-old’s confidence and demeanor under pressure.
“Here’s the thing about Caleb Williams, why I’m so smitten on him,” Daniel said. “You go back, you win, you come back from that hamstring injury. You play really well against the Falcons, then you come home against the Pats who had been playing a lot better, and it was the way you were able to throw the football in the tight windows. It was the way you were able to throw accurately with pressure in your face. It was the way that you took over that game.
“He’s playing with extreme confidence right now. I can absolutely say with no doubt in my mind that Caleb Williams continues to play like this, he’s gonna be in the MVP race. He throws the football and plays the position of quarterback properly.”
