Exec, reporter make clear statement on potential C.J. Stroud extension

What once looked like a slam dunk for the Houston Texans may not be the case anymore.

Former rookie star C.J. Stroud has regressed from his impressive first year in the league.

And while subpar pass protection might have something to do with that, the lack of improvement has held their otherworldly defense back more often than not.

That's why executives around the league believe a contract extension isn't imminent. Talking to FanSided's Jason La Canfora, one general manager painted a pessimistic picture for the former No. 2 pick.

The Texans won't rush to give C.J. Stroud a contract extension

“Nick’s not going to make the mistake the Dolphins and Cardinals made,” one GM told La Canfora. “He’s not going to be in a hurry to do anything. Stroud has to go out and prove it."

"Would be pretty surprised if this wasn’t tabled until 2027," La Canfora concluded.

Stroud has shown the potential to be an elite pocket passer, but consistency hasn't been there, and he hasn't taken a leap since he took the league by storm out of Ohio State.

The Texans picked up his fifth-year player option, so they clearly still believe in him. Then again, they might not want to hurt themselves by giving him a market-setting deal unless he proves he's worthy of that.

DeMeco Ryans' team arguably has the best defense in the league, and some of that is thanks to Stroud being on a rookie deal.

They have some intriguing weapons and would probably be a top-5 team in the league with slightly above-average quarterback play.

All eyes will be on the former Ohio State star in 2026, and this might be his final shot to prove that he deserves to make top dollar and, more importantly, be the face of their franchise.
