Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott continues to say all the right things and blame only himself for the fumbling woes that cost him playing time during Monday's 38-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals after he twice turned the ball over.
As Todd Archer explained for ESPN, the 25-year-old ball-carrier is working to pinpoint what exactly is plaguing him this fall.
"I just think I need to not put myself in vulnerable situations. I've just got to lock in and focus," Elliott told reporters on Wednesday. "I don't think there's a specific answer. All I can do is give myself, watch as much film as I can, gather as much information as I can and try to use that to help me. But I don't think there's an exact answer on how to fix these fumble problems I've had this year."
Such comments are nothing new from the three-time Pro Bowler. "It's not acceptable and it's something I gotta figure out," he said after Monday's performance to forget. "I don't know. I need to figure something out. ... I want to say I'm sorry. This one is on me. I have to be better for this team."
After he lost a fumble in a loss to the Cleveland Browns earlier this month, Elliott remarked:
"It hurts. I look at myself as a leader of this team and look at myself as a guy that kind of is supposed to help lift the team up when we get down, not be the cause of getting behind. So I just got to get rid of that issue. That can't continue to be something that I do for the rest of the season. I can't give up the ball anymore."
Before this fall, Elliott had never lost more than two fumbles in a single season. He's now at four lost fumbles across six games. Perhaps the biggest fear regarding Elliott moving forward is that he'll suffer from overthinking the issue -- known as having "the yips" in other sports.
