Falcons add another name to their coaching search

The Atlanta Falcons’ list of candidates for their vacant head coaching position continues to grow, with Vance Joseph now set to interview for the job.

Per Adam Schefter, Joseph will also be interviewing for the Raiders, Giants, Cardinals, and Titans head coaching vacancies.

The interest is warranted given the success of the Broncos defense this season, which has helped Denver secure the No. 1 seed in the AFC. Under Joseph, the Broncos rank second in yards allowed per game and third in points allowed. They also led the league in sacks with 68, 11 more than the Falcons, who finished second.

Joseph has been coaching defense in the NFL since 2005 and has long been regarded as one of the top defensive coordinators in the league. His head coaching résumé, however, is less impressive. He previously served as the Broncos head coach from 2017–2018, compiling an 11–21 record. It’s worth noting, though, that he didn’t have much of a chance given Denver’s quarterback situation at the time. Over those two seasons, their most consistent option under center was Case Keenum.

With so much uncertainty at quarterback, many Falcons fans would prefer an offensive head coach who can groom the next franchise signal caller. Arthur Blank and the rest of the decision-makers may feel the same way, but if history has taught us anything, defensive coaches have a way of winning Blank over in the interview room. Three of the Falcons’ last four head coaches have come from the defensive side of the ball, with Arthur Smith being the lone exception.
