Falcons Coach Gives New Update on Quarterback Situation

Atlanta Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski said Monday that Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa will share first-team practice snaps this week as the team’s quarterback situation finally moves into a true evaluation phase.

Penix received medical clearance for full 11-on-11 work after months of limited participation following knee surgery. The third-year passer had been restricted mostly to individual drills, walkthroughs and seven-on-seven periods since training camp opened.

“The new part for Mike is just being in there in with a full offensive line, a full defensive line, but he’s been in walkthrough huddles, he’s been in 7-on-7, he’s obviously gone through individuals,” Stefanski said.

“So, this is a good — now that Mike is cleared — it’s good that he can start that process of getting back to 11-on-11.”

The timing matters. The Falcons open the regular season in a few weeks, and Stefanski has stressed the need to settle the position. Until Penix could take snaps against a full defense with linemen in front of him, coaches said a fair comparison was impossible.

Penix tore the ACL in his left knee last November and had surgery the week of Nov. 24, 2025. He spent the offseason and early camp rebuilding strength while Tagovailoa handled the bulk of the team periods.

Before the injury cut short his 2025 season, Penix completed 60.1 percent of his passes for 1,982 yards. He threw nine touchdowns and three interceptions in the games he played.

On Thursday, before the clearance became official, Penix sounded optimistic about his readiness.

“As far as a pocket, I can do everything,” Penix said. “If I had a rush coming at me and everything, I can get away. But it’s just, right now, if I don’t get away, that’s what we think about. If I don’t get away, I don’t think my doctor is ready for me to take those hits right now, but that time is coming real soon.”

That time has arrived. Coaches and teammates watched him take those full-team reps Monday, giving the staff its first real look at how the 2024 first-round pick moves under pressure in this system.

Tagovailoa, signed in free agency to provide experience and competition, has taken most of the early first-team work. The former Miami starter brings a different style — quicker decisions and timing throws — while Penix offers a stronger arm and familiarity with several of the skill players already on the roster.

Stefanski has avoided setting a firm deadline for naming a starter. He repeatedly points to daily competition as the standard inside the building rather than any single announcement.

The rest of the quarterback room has stayed busy too. Undrafted rookie Jack Strand turned heads with a strong preseason outing, but the coaching staff has kept him working with the second and third groups for now while the top two battle for the No. 1 job.

Atlanta’s offense features proven pieces around the quarterbacks, including running back Bijan Robinson, wide receiver Drake London and tight end Kyle Pitts. That supporting cast raises the stakes for whoever wins the job.

Penix spent earlier practices standing nearby during team periods, listening to calls and running through mental reps. Those simulations are over. He is now operating in real time with the full offensive line and facing the defense in live periods.

Stefanski, a two-time Coach of the Year, has built offenses that adapt to the quarterback’s strengths. Whether that means leaning on Tagovailoa’s rhythm or Penix’s downfield ability remains the central question of the final stretch of the preseason.

The Falcons have not announced whether Penix will play in the final exhibition game. For now the focus stays on practice, where equal opportunity finally exists.

Fans and analysts have followed every update closely because the position has been the biggest uncertainty for a roster otherwise built to contend. A healthy Penix changes the conversation from recovery timeline to performance comparison.

Both quarterbacks understand the opportunity. Daily work will decide who lines up under center when the games start counting. The competition that coaches insisted could not begin until both were fully available is underway.
