The Atlanta Falcons have been just one of a few NFL teams that have carried four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster this season.
Each of the four has played at some point so far this season, and outside of Michael Penix Jr., the results from the rest have been less than stellar. Because of that, Atlanta is bringing in another addition to its QB room, signaling the end of the road for one of the current quarterbacks on the roster.
According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, veteran quarterback Andy Dalton is signing with the Falcons. Dalton was recently released by the Philadelphia Eagles and reportedly turned down an opportunity to return there before signing with Atlanta.
The Falcons will be the seventh NFL team Dalton has spent time with during his career and the third in the last two seasons.

With the addition of Dalton, someone was going to be the odd man out, as Atlanta was not going to carry five quarterbacks. It was likely going to be either rookie Jack Strand or veteran Cooper Rush who would be let go, and that decision has ultimately been made.
According to Schefter, it was Rush who has been released by Atlanta. Rush started the first two games of the season and was ultimately benched in favor of Strand due to poor performance.
Dalton had been serving as the emergency third-string QB, and that will likely be his role with the Falcons. It is unlikely that he'll move into the backup role ahead of Tua Tagovailoa, as he was expected to be the Week 1 starter before dealing with an injury.
Dalton will be another veteran presence for Penix to learn under throughout the remainder of this season, and he will be available if injuries pop up and he is needed in a game.
