Falcons downgrade key player who greatly contributed to Week 1 loss

The Atlanta Falcons  aren't giving Younghoe Koo a chance to redeem himself in Week 2 after he missed a game-tying field-goal attempt in a 23-20 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Falcons downgraded Koo to out for Sunday night's contest against the Minnesota Vikings. Injury was not a reason for the downgrade. The Falcons plan to use John Parker Romo as their kicker against the Vikings.

"Falcons ruled out kicker Younghoe Koo for Sunday night's matchup with the Minnesota Vikings and listed his reason for downgraded as not injury related," Schefter posted on X. "Falcons also promoted kicker Parker Romo to kick Sunday night vs. the Vikings."

Atlanta Falcons K Younghoe Koo missed a critical field goal

Koo made two of his three field-goal attempts in Week 1. But his lone miss was costly, as a 44-yard attempt with six seconds remaining in the game sailed wide right, ensuring a loss for the Falcons.

Koo, 31, has made 85.8 percent of his field-goal attempts in his eight-year NFL career. He's the 15th-most accurate kicker in league history with a minimum of 100 attempts. The Pro Bowl kicker's numbers declined in 2024, when he made just 73.5 percent of his field-goal attempts. Koo was the league's co-leader in scoring for 2020 with 144 points.

The New Orleans Saints initially signed Romo as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia Tech in 2022. He's spent time with the Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears and New England Patriots. He earned first-team All-XFL honors in 2023 with the San Antonio Brahmas. Romo made 11 of his 12 field-goal attempts for the Vikings in 2024, including a long of 55 yards. He went 7-of-8 on extra-point attempts. Those are his only stats during his time in the league.
