The Atlanta Falcons suffered an embarrassing 30-0 loss at the hands of the previously winless Carolina Panthers.

The loss for Atlanta came despite out-gaining the Panthers 332-224, mostly thanks to three turnovers - including two interceptions from quarterback Michael Penix Jr. who was benched in favor of backup quarterback Kirk Cousins. Falcons head coach Raheem Morris made it clear the decision was made after "the game was out of hand" in an effort to keep his starters "out of harm's way."

After a brutal performance from Penix and the offense, Morris announced a notable change for the coaching staff as offensive coordinator Zac Robinson moves from the booth to the sideline. Robinson will

Penix was 18-of-36 for 172 yards and two interceptions Sunday, including his first career pick-six.

"I'm never OK with not playing," Penix said when asked about Cousins entering the game. "At the end of the day, I listened to my head coach, and he did what he felt was best for the team and the decision that was made by him. Cousins completed 5-of-7 passing for just 29 yards in relief of Penix. The young quarterback will get the start on Sunday afternoon against the Washington Commanders, who might be without starting quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Atlanta and Washington kick off at 1 p.m. ET on Sept. 28. The game will be broadcast on CBS.
