The Atlanta Falcons could be on the verge of a quarterback change.
After the team's 19-16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Falcons head coach Arthur Smith didn't rule out changes at any spot, including quarterback.

With the Falcons entering their bye week, it could be the perfect opportunity for the team to swap out veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota for rookie Desmond Ridder.
Mariota has had his moments of success as Atlanta's starter this season, but the last seven games have not been kind. He's 2-5 during that stretch and has struggled mightily in the passing game.
The team has an easy out on Mariota's contract this offseason, too. His days as a Falcon could be coming to a close.

Ridder was taken in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Falcons. Some wondered if he would start right away, but Mariota won the job during training camp.
However, the Falcons are 5-8 and in second place in the NFC South. While the team could make a last-ditch playoff push if Tampa Bay falters down the stretch, it feels unlikely.
The Falcons may not want to enter 2023 without some idea of what Ridder can do behind center. While it's no sure thing that Ridder starts for the Falcons next year, they have a golden opportunity to get some sample games in to see if he's a possible starter.
