NFL fans were surprised to read last Sunday that Atlanta Falcons star wide receiver Calvin Ridley was stepping away from the team and the league to focus on his mental health.

According to Tori McElhaney of the Falcons' website, the team officially placed Ridley on the reserve-NFI list (non-football injury) Friday. Per league rules, Ridley must now miss a minimum of three weeks, meaning he won't be eligible to return until the Nov. 28 game at the Jacksonville Jaguars.
It's unclear if he plans to play again this season.
"Obviously, we're worried about Calvin," tight end Hayden Hurst said. "We're here for him. We love him. He's got some stuff that he needs to work out. But he knows that we're here for him."
As ESPN's Michael Rothstein noted, Atlanta head coach Arthur Smith told reporters after last Sunday's loss to the Carolina Panthers that Ridley was dealing with something "personal."
"And it's going to remain personal on my end. Calvin's statement speaks for him, and so when we got here today, we talked and put him inactive," Smith added at that time.
Per ESPN stats, Ridley is third on the team with 31 receptions and 281 receiving yards and second with a pair of touchdown catches.
