Falcons Snag Overseas Kicker From NFL International Player Pathway Program

German-born kicker Lenny Krieg impressed scouts at the NFL Combine and the International Player Pathway Program.

At the NFL Combine, Krieg made all 14 field goals he attempted, ranging from 35 to 55 yards in length. Atlanta was the first team to host the German-born kicker, and afterwards, he decided to sign with the Atlanta Falcons to a three-year deal that includes a signing bonus and guarantees.

Krieg would convert on 11-of-16 field goals while playing for the Stuttgart Surge of the EFL in 2025. It remains to be seen how Atlanta will handle the struggles of Younghoe Koo, who converted only 25-of-34 field goals at a 73.5% clip. Koo has been Atlanta's kicker since 2019, and a relatively reliable one at that, converting on 86.5% of kicks.

Koo has also been a fan favorite and has come through in the clutch many times in the past, winning Atlanta a few football games solely on his foot. If Atlanta were to hold onto Koo, a competition may ensue in camp between the two kickers, especially since Krieg now has guaranteed money on his deal and Koo does not. It was reported a few weeks ago that the Falcons may be shopping Koo, who has two years remaining on his five-year deal.

The drama and/or looming competition may come as a shock to Falcons fans, given that the team appears to be content with focusing solely on the defensive side of the football team. Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot has recognized that the Falcons require depth at all positions, except for the running back room.
