What else can be said? The Kansas City Chiefs are looking for a three-peat. The Philadelphia Eagles are looking for revenge and the second Super Bowl win in franchise history.
One team is a roster loaded with talent across the board. The other has the best quarterback and play-caller in the NFL.
Who ya got? We asked our staff for their thoughts. Let's dive in, starting with our Eagles' lead writer Kelsey Kramer and Charles Goldman on the Chiefs' side.
Super Bowl LIX will kick off at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, February 9th and will be broadcast by FOX.
Eagles 34, Chiefs 31
Betting against the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes sounds like a terrible idea if you haven't been watching the Philadelphia Eagles play all season long. If you have, however, then you know exactly what this "underdog" Eagles team is capable, and that's winning.
It may not be perfect and it may not be pretty but we'll see every single player on Philly's roster throw their body on the line for a big play, starting with the Eagles' offensive line and star rusher Saquon Barkley. And don't get me started on the Eagles defense that is very young yet nearly flawless. The Eagles will wreck Mahomes' three-peat Super Bowl dream. And it will be another "he's not real" game for Barkley, who will also walk away crowned SBLIX MVP.
Chiefs 41, Eagles 21
If you look at Kansas City’s game plan in the AFC Championship Game against the Bills, they looked to exploit weaknesses they found on film, and they accomplished just that with the counter-read-option. We’ve seen Kansas City do the same to Philadelphia in Super Bowl LVII with “corn dog.”
I do not doubt they will find something to cling to and exploit in this game, especially when the Eagles had some notable early-season struggles. The question will be whether Philly has the discipline this time around to self-scout and break tendencies. Ultimately, the Chiefs didn’t come this far, just to get this far. I fully expect this to be one of their best games all season, with elite execution and play-calling in all three phases.
Chiefs 30, Eagles 29
During the conference championships, Andy Reid had the perfect play call on third down to clear the way for RB Samaje Perine, who iced the game with the easiest yards after the catch of his career. Earlier, Steve Spagnuolo won the chess match against the Bills' Josh Allen with a perfect blitz call. At the beginning of the game, Reid also called the perfect "first 15" plays to open the game with the touchdown.
It's what the Chiefs do. Timely play-calling. Can't beat that in the biggest stage. The Eagles are great and probably the better team. But there's a reason why Kansas City has a shot at the three-peat. They're better in these spots.
Chiefs 27, Eagles 21
Both defenses have played their best at the most important points of the season, but it's ultimately hard to completely stop talented and also clutch offenses. The Eagles have a lot of talent and emerged in a cloudy NFC, but it's hard to bet against the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes. Even though the Chiefs had a somewhat underwhelming season in underlying stats, they are extremely well-coached, Mahomes is always impressive at the perfect moments, and Steve Spagnuolo designs ultra-specific gameplans like no other defensive coordinator in football nowadays.
Chiefs 28, Eagles 25
They meet again. The Eagles and Chiefs renew in a battle for the championship that we can only hope is as close as their first go-round. It’s truly a great matchup on paper. The best roster in the NFL takes on the best HC-QB tandem of this decade and maybe longer. It’s the matchup I had coming into the season and in staying true to that prediction way back in September, I believe the Chiefs make NFL history and win their third consecutive Super Bowl. Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce will have a memorable moment while Steve Spagnuolo will do just enough to slow down the Eagles running game.
Eagles 33, Chiefs 27
The last time these teams played in Super Bowl 57, I opted for the Chiefs in a coinflip game. Both rosters have undergone some major changes since then, but the big difference is Kansas City is now older and less dominant in the trenches. We'll see some strength-on-strength as Patrick Mahomes is an ace against blitzes, and the Kansas City run defense and man coverage abilities will challenge the Eagles' tendencies. However, Philadelphia's revamp has made them more explosive and capable of sticking to their preferred gameplan of running opponents into the dirt. This will be an instant classic.
Chiefs 26, Eagles 24
The outcome of this game will be determined when the Eagles are on offense and the Chiefs are on defense. Saquon Barkley behind Philly’s offensive line is a proven nightmare to go up against, but this is Steve Spagnuolo we’re talking about. He’s the best defensive coordinator in the game like Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback.
I think the Eagles have the better roster and Vic Fangio is right behind Spags in a respectable DC ranking, but I know the Chiefs can win against any team they face. Their defense will be capable of getting the one stop they need, and if Mahomes didn’t already take care of it on offense, he’s the guy anyone would want to take it home. I’m not going against them now.
Chiefs 30, Eagles 27
This game is going to come down to the wire. Both teams have dominant offenses and very disruptive defenses. Because of that, the expectation is that they will trade off scores throughout the game. However, as I’ve said numerous times before, Patrick Mahomes reminds me a lot of Tom Brady. And what I learned from Brady’s epic run is that you can never bet against him. So, with that logic, there’s not betting against Mahomes.
Eagles 28, Chiefs 27
The Buffalo Bills took the Chiefs down to the very end, fighting their way to a narrow loss to the Chiefs yet again. Josh Allen had the ball with three and a half minutes left and a chance to win, and it didn’t happen. There are a couple things the Eagles have going for them that the Bills didn’t. Their defensive front is absolutely elite, with Josh Sweat, Jalen Carter, and Nolan Smith capable of wreaking havoc. Their linebackers are fast and instinctive, and their secondary, with two breakout rookies in Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell, will have the defense in a great position to handle the Chiefs.
The offense is no slouch either. Saquon Barkley and the run game are as lethal as it gets, and with James Cook putting up over 130 scrimmage yards in the AFC Championship Game, Barkley should be primed to be able to keep his hot streak going. The Eagles have a roster that can do it. Whether or not they can get past a team that simply has the winning gene is a different story
Chiefs 31, Eagles 28
It's quite a matchup between the two teams. The Chiefs are going for their third-consecutive Super Bowl win and the Eagles are trying for their second-ever win. These two teams had a classic matchup two years ago when the Chiefs won 38-35 and it felt like the Eagles were going to get the win.
This is pretty simple. No matter how good the Eagles are, the Chiefs are one of those teams that feel inevitable. That's the case here.
Chiefs 28, Eagles 24
With a three-peat on the line, I am going to ride with the Chiefs. Betting against Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes is not a good idea, even if they’re playing a team like the Eagles, who are plenty capable of beating them. Kansas City can’t let Saquon Barkley run wild, or the Eagles are going to have a great chance. I have the Chiefs getting a crucial stop late to seal the win.
Chiefs 24, Eagles 21
On paper, most of the matchups in this game fall in the favor of the Eagles. Philadelphia is better up front on both sides of the ball, has the superior playmaking talent and has a secondary capable of slowing down the Chiefs' weapons in the passing game. Where they are inferior, is in the matchups that seem likely to matter most. Patrick Mahomes has a history of finding the answers in the clutch that Jalen Hurts does not possess, while it's difficult not to see Andy Reid and Steve Spagnuolo winning the battle between the play-callers against Vic Fangio and Kellen Moore. It will be close, but that's how the Chiefs like it, and that's how they'll complete the three-peat.
Chiefs 28, Eagles 24
The last game of the year -- the one that we have all been waiting for, and yet, Sunday still feels so far away. After this game, it's a long wait till we see organized professional football played again. Luckily, we get to watch the two best teams in the NFL play the last one, in a rematch of what was a very good Super Bowl the first time these two met two years ago. This time, I have the Chiefs winning again. There's just something special in the air about the possibility of a three-peat. And, I believe that Steve Spagnuolo will cook up something crazy to help contain Saquon Barkley. But, only time will tell.
Chiefs 38, Eagles 28
Last time these two teams met in the Super Bowl, quarterback Jalen Hurts had the game of his life, and the Eagles still lost. Sure, they have Saquon Barkley this time around, but the Chiefs have locked down the running back position all year long. Barkley will rip off a few impressive runs, but he won’t dominate the game.
Kansas City’s offense is usually its biggest enemy. If it can limit the turnovers and penalties, it will move the ball and put up points. The Chiefs had their best offensive performance of the season in last week’s AFC Championship Game, and I expect them to carry that momentum over against Philadelphia. With a three-peat on the line, the stakes are too high for the Chiefs to not get the job done.
Chiefs 30, Eagles 24
Unlike some I'm pretty pumped for this matchup. I think both teams have been playing their best football as of late and are fairly healthy heading into the matchup. I'm interested to see what the Eagles plan defensively is but in the end I for one won't be betting against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs with a chance to make NFL history as the first ever Super Bowl there peat. I think the Eagles have the ball late with the chance to score but Spags and the defense put the game away.
Chiefs 24, Eagles 23
The Chiefs have continually found a way to win this season and that won't change with a shot at a three-peat on the line. The Chiefs' bend-don't-break defense that brings plenty of creative pressure on opposing quarterbacks will do just enough to stifle the efficiency of the Eagles' prolific offense full of studs like AJ Brown and Saquon Barkley. Patrick Mahomes will find his emerging star rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy in a pivotal moment to win Super Bowl LIX 24-23 in spectacular fashion. Xavier Worthy wins Super Bowl LIX MVP as he extends his streak of games with 5+ receptions to eight in a row.
Chiefs 23, Eagles 17
It’s wild how this game has the ability to be a low-scoring, defensive slugfest or a high-scoring track meet like we saw back in Super Bowl LVII.
That being said, you simply can’t bet against Patrick Mahomes in these situations, but even worse for the Eagles is I don’t think you can bet against Andy Reid and Steve Spagnuolo, either. Those three will be the driving force behind the first-ever three-peat as we witness a new chapter of NFL history.
